You know the phrase, “don’t judge a book by its cover”? It applies here. The outside looks sketch. And while the inside is tight quarters it is quite fun to hunt. The folks that work in the shop are friendly too. Just make sure you check the hours before you go!

I recently had an experience that left me feeling disappointed. I’m a photographer and was in town visiting, and I’ve always loved the charm of Adam’s Books. I decided to set up my camera on the public sidewalk (not blocking the entrance or photographing customers) to take a storefront image while the business was still closed.nnAround noon, the owner approached me and spoke to me in a way that felt confrontational and accusatory. I immediately apologized and packed up my equipment. I even came back inside afterward to apologize again and explain that I meant no intrusion and genuinely admired the shop. I had actually planned to gift a finished ambrotype.nnI understand that businesses may prefer photographers to reach out in advance, and I respect that. However, the interaction felt unnecessarily harsh, especially since I was in a public space and the shop was not yet open.nnAs someone who already feels anxious photographing in public, the experience was discouraging. I truly love independent bookstores and wanted to celebrate this one, but unfortunately I did not feel welcomed.

What a special place. Found two gems right in the window display. Affordable, too. The owner was so welcoming. Can’t wait to come back next time i’m in town. Highly recommended!

I fancy myself a bit of a bookstore connoisseur and this place inhabits a very unique and wonderful category. If you enjoy the hunt and adding elbow grease to your browsing, you won’t mind the multiple rows of stacked books blocking other books or boxes piled up or a little bit of dust on your hands afterwards. I always walk out with some unique gems. Highly recommend. Bring cash or Venmo!

I love Adams Books. A book lovers haven, books of all kinds on the walls. The woman who owns it knows where all of the books are and can help you find something if you're looking for something specific. She also changes the displays in the window every week. Too bad it's only open on Saturdays. Great place to go and explore. A great part of Columbia's history!
