The Art of War is the most famed of China’s Seven Military Classics. The ancient treatise on battle, tactics and strategy has influenced Eastern as well as Western thought concerning war. The first translation of the Chinese text took place in 1772, by Jean Joseph Marie Amoit, who translated it into his native tongue, French. A British army officer, Everard Ferguson Calthrop, undertook a partial translation in English in 1905. The first complete English translation was published in 1910, by Lionel Giles. This volume contains only Sun Tzu’s text, The Art of War, translated by Lionel Giles, it does not include commentary.
