Official synopsis Publisher
I earnestly wanted to be a Psychiatric Nurse. I thought it was about listening to people; sharing their pain; helping them find answers to help themselves. I discovered it was the opposite. Silencing them. Ultimately, I was silenced by a psychiatrist who engineered my constructive dismissal when I spoke out in defence of a suicidal patient.
Meet the patients I met along the way. You’ll have encountered some of them yourselves. They’re ordinary people beset by extraordinary life problems. The psychiatrist in question later came under scrutiny when he (wrongly) discharged a patient who stabbed a little girl to death. He had to undergo retraining.
‘Shut up and keep taking the pills!’ is written with humour and compassion, despite (growing) disillusionment. The strong belief that we can learn to help ourselves without taking psychoactive medication pervades the narrative, shining a beacon of light in a dark world of despair, and is borne out by the many hundreds of people I’ve helped over the past thirty years.
