Editorial overview Touché

Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper is presented in a unique comic strip format by artists Cecil Doughty and Ruggero Giovannini. Published by Book Palace on December 20, 2014, this edition spans 78 pages and is available in English. The book features two distinct adaptations of Cooper’s classic adventure tale, originally published in 1826, set against the backdrop of the 1757 conflict between France and Great Britain for control of North America.

Readers will find a rich narrative that follows the journey of Colonel Munro’s daughters, Cora and Alice, as they seek to reunite with their father amidst peril. The adaptations showcase different artistic styles, with Giovannini’s full-color version from 1968 and Doughty’s detailed rendition from 1980, both striving to remain faithful to Cooper’s original text. This volume not only highlights the artistic interpretations of the story but also encourages exploration of the historical fiction genre, particularly in relation to colonial America and the revolution.

Giovanninis strip is “simply the finest, most authentic and most colourful, picture strip adaptation of ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ ever to appear”. The second version, from ‘Look and Learn’, was drawn in fine and authentic detail by The second version, from ‘Look and Learn’, was drawn in fine and authentic detail by Cecil Doughty and was originally published in 1980. Using as much as possible Coopers own words, it can be fairly classed as one of the most faithful picture strip adaptations of the story. Although obviously taken from the same source material, both versions differ in more ways than just the look of their artwork. These, and the further differences when compared to various cinematic versions, will hopefully inspire readers to seek out and read Cooper’s original book.
