Official synopsis Publisher

JANE EYREJane Eyre (originally published as Jane Eyre: An Autobiography) is a novel by the English writer Charlotte Brontë. It was published on October 16, 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. of London, England, under the pen name “Currer Bell”. The first American edition was published the following year by Harper & Brothers of New York.Mainly of the Bildungsroman genre, Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of her eponymous heroine, including her growing up as an adult and her love for Mr. Rochester, the fictional master Byronic of Thornfield Hall. In its internalization of action – emphasis is put on the progressive development of Jane’s moral and spiritual sensitivity, and all events are colored by increased intensity that was previously the realm of poetry – Jane Eyre revolutionized l art of fiction. Charlotte Bronte has been called the “first historian of private consciousness” and the literary ancestor of writers like Proust and Joyce. The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of Christian morality at the base, but is nevertheless a novel that many consider before its time given Jane’s individualistic character and the exploration of classism, sexuality, of religion, and proto-feminism.The novel is a first-person narrative from the point of view of the title character. The setting of the novel lies somewhere in the north of England, at the end of the reign of George III (1760-1820). It goes through five distinct stages: Jane’s childhood at Gateshead Hall, where she is emotionally and physically abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she earns friends and role models but suffers from privation and oppression; her time as a housekeeper at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her employer Byronic, Edward Rochester; his time with the Rivers family, during which his serious and cold ecclesiastical cousin, St. John Rivers, offers him; and his meeting with, and the marriage to, his beloved Rochester. In these sections, the novel provides perspectives on a number of important social issues and ideas, many of which criticize the status quo. CHARLOTTE BRONTËCharlotte Brontë (born April 21, 1816 – March 31, 1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Bronte sisters who survived to adulthood and whose novels have become classics of English literature. She first published her works (including her best-known novel, Jane Eyre) under the pseudonym Currer Bell.Bronte’s first manuscript, The Professor, failed to get a publisher, although it was encouraged by an encouraging response from Smith, Elder & Co. of Cornhill, who expressed interest in longer work that Currer Bell might wish to send. Brontë responded by finishing and sending a second manuscript in August 1847. Six weeks later, Jane Eyre was published. It tells the story of a simple housekeeper, Jane, who, after difficulties in his youth, falls in love with his employer, Mr. Rochester. They get married, but only after Rochester’s first mad woman, whom Jane initially has no knowledge of, dies in a dramatic house fire. The style of the book was innovative, combining naturalism and Gothic melodrama, and innovated by being written from an intensely evoked female first-person perspective. Bronte believed that art was most convincing when based on personal experience; In Jane Eyre, she turned the experience into a novel with universal appeal.Jane Eyre had immediate commercial success and first received favorable reviews. GH Lewes wrote that it was “a statement from the bottom of a spirit that struggled, suffered, endured”, and stated that it was “suspiria de profundis!” (sighs from the depths) Speculation on the identity and genre of the mysterious Currer Bell intensified with the publication of Wuthering Heights by Ellis Bell (Emily) and Agnes Gray by Acton Bell (Anne).
