Editorial overview Touché

Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, published by Oxford University Press in 1998, is a classic work of fiction that has captivated readers since its initial release in 1726. This edition spans 371 pages and is presented in English. The narrative follows Gulliver as he embarks on extraordinary journeys to four distinct lands, each inhabited by unique beings, from tiny people to towering giants, and includes satirical elements that critique human nature.

Readers will encounter a blend of adventure and humor as Gulliver navigates these fantastical realms. The first destination features inhabitants only a few inches tall, while the second showcases giants. The third location is a satellite filled with impractical scientists, and the final land is ruled by horses who view humans as inferior. This edition is based on the 1735 text, reflecting revisions made by Swift to enhance the original narrative.

Official synopsis Publisher

Since its first publication in 1726, Gulliver’s Travels has remained an undisputed classic. Gulliver travels to four extraordinary places. In the first, people are five or six inches tall, in the second, sixty or seventy feet. The third is a kind of satellite inhabited by absurdly impractical scientists, and the fourth is a country governed by horses who treat humans as filthy animals. By turns exciting and comic, Gulliver’s fantastic adventures were read, in the words of Gay, ‘from the cabinet-council to the Nursery’, as a travel book and as a powerful satire on human nature. The text is based on that of 1735, incorporating revisions by Swift of the first edition.
