Editorial overview Touché

Eternal I.v. Pole My Last Gift of Wisdom I Give to the World I Love; Given to Me by the God I Love by Lama Milkweed L. Augustine is a 496-page book published by AuthorHouse in August 2003. This work explores the historical context of teaching beginning reading in America, particularly focusing on the adoption of a deaf-mute method in 1930. The author examines how this method, which emphasizes meaning over sound, has contributed to the ongoing issue of functional illiteracy in the country.

Readers will find a detailed analysis of the evolution of reading instruction, including the impact of “Dick and Jane” primers and their approach to teaching. The book aims to compile historical sources related to these teaching methods, providing insights into the challenges of literacy education. With themes rooted in biography, personal memoirs, and religious perspectives, this edition offers a comprehensive look at the intersection of education and societal issues.

Official synopsis Publisher

The puzzling adoption in 1930 of a deaf-mute method for teaching beginning reading to hearing children in America can only be understood when the long history of teaching beginning reading is known. The deaf-mute method adopted almost immediately after 1930 from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans and from Canada to Mexico was the “meaning” approach to teach the reading of alphabetic print instead of the “sound” approach. “Dick and Jane” primers and their clones, which teach beginning reading by meaning instead of by sound are, indeed, the disgraceful source for America’s functional illiteracy problem. The history is an attempt to bring together most historical sources on those primers and on the long teaching of beginning reading itself so that functional illiteracy can be properly understood and successfully corrected.
